Oxidation and Vitamin E

One of nature`s most interesting paradoxes is that while almost every living organism on the planet requires oxygen to survive, it is also oxygen which causes those same organisms to esperience the effects of aging and eventually cease to exist.

The damage caused by oxygen is due to oxidative stress, which is produced by free radicals inside the body. These damaged molecules are well-known carcinogens, and one of the principal causes of several different forms of cancer.

On a more positive note, we are not completely at the mercy of these free-radicals. Fortunately, there are steps that we can take to help protect ourselves. The most important is to increase our consumption of anti-oxidants, which, as their name implies, are molecules that work to prevent oxidation, and thus oxidative stress.

It has been proven to significantly protect our bodies from the damage caused by these free radicals, and in cases where damage has already occurred, it is able to reverse some of this damage

Cholesterol and Vitamin E

Oxygen is also behind the process which converts cholesterol molecules into that silent killer so feared by all cardiovascular patients, LDL. Cholesterol is a natural substance which is commonly found in several different types of foods. After being ingested, it is it is absorbed into the bloodstream and is transported to the different fatty tissues of the body for storage.

In the bloodstream, cholesterol is transported by molecules known as Low Density Lipoproteins (or LDL, for short). The problem occurs when these LDL molecules become oxidized subsequently react with the cholesterol to form fatty plaques which are deposited on the walls of arteries and begin to impede the flow of blood.

The benfits of Vitamin E have been shown to prevent LDL from being oxidized, thereby preventing plaque formation and the consequent blockage of arteries. Without anti-oxidants to counteract the process, plaque would continue to be deposited on the arterial walls and eventually they would completely impede the flow of blood. The end result is a myocardial infarction, or heart attack. But even partial obstructions in these arteries have dramatic negative consequences, including hypertension and angina pectoris.

The antioxidant properties of Vitamin E have also been proven to significantly reduce the damaging effects of UV radiation on the skin. In other words, Vitamin E works as a natural remedy for skin problems.

It does this by helping provide an invisible shield over the otherwise-vulnerable skin from the harmful effects of the sun. This is why in their awareness campaigns against skin cancer, dermatologists almost unanimously recommend Vitamin E supplements as an effective preventative measure against the development of melanoma.

Although much less research is available to support these claims, there is evidence which strongly suggests that the health benefits of Vitamin E include working against the development of Alzheimer`s disease. It can also work to slowdown the progression of the disease in those elderly patients who already suffer from it. Other studies suggest that vitamin E can be effective in decreasing the severity of symptoms during episodes of acute pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas).

The health benefits of vitamin E are greatly enhanced when taken together with vitamin C. When combined, the two have synergistic effects on each other. This means that all those benefits mentioned above that come from taking Vitamin E supplements are potentiated by simply adding a vitamin C supplement to the diet.

In terms of natural sources of vitamin E, fruits are at the top of the list, particularly citrus fruits such as oranges. Significant amounts of this vitamin can also be obtained from eating nuts, vegetables and fruits. We also recommend taking multivitamin to be confident that your body is receiving the amounts of vitamins and minerals that you are missing out on in your diet.
